Fears and Uncertainty – Living in a foreign language environment -2
In addition to Japanese being a foreign language for me, English is also a foreign language. This means my brain is constantly managing two non-native languages. I can only speak my mother tongue online through the Internet. Even that can be challenging at times because of the time difference. Japan is six hours ahead of Estonia during the summer and seven hours ahead during the winter.
Despite all of this, I feel gratitude and on how blessed I am to have been given the opportunity to live in the heart of Shikoku Island. Because of that, I remain optimistic and continue looking for ways to practice the language more effectively. That is why I chose to attend karate classes, where everything is in Japanese, and a basket-weaving workshop with older local women, so that I can immerse myself in Japanese for a few hours at a time. In addition, my Nihon Buyo teacher speaks to me only in Japanese, which is excellent practice as well.
However, I do have a few fears when it comes to Japanese, – telephone calls, dealing with government offices or banks, and visiting doctors are still situations that make me nervous. I do not want to burden my friends by asking them to translate for me. I have always wanted to take responsibility for my own life. Because of that, I have had to face my fears many times, take a deep breath, and do things that intimidated me.
I have made phone calls and answered calls in Japanese, but I still feel uncomfortable. If the conversation becomes too complicated or the vocabulary too advanced, I struggle.
