SUMMER, – THE WAVE OF FESTIVALS 2

AWA ODORI AND OBON

Awa Odori takes place during Obon. I learned that this is precisely why Awa Odori has a much broader meaning than simply being a dance festival. It is a coming together of the living and the dead, the community and the music, all connected through dance.

In Japan, the celebration of death and ancestors is not necessarily quiet or sombre. I like that!

With Awa Odori, you do not simply dance to the music. Your body becomes part of the rhythm. The steps, the position of the knees, the movement of the hands, the beat of the drums, the ringing of the bells, and the movement of the whole group all become one. Experiencing all of this was something very special.

In this sense, Awa Odori feels to me like a very Japanese phenomenon. The individual does not disappear into the group; instead, one person’s movement becomes part of a larger rhythm. It is a completely different kind of energy from dance performed on a stage. The rhythms of the kane and taiko completely pulled me in.

I slipped into a kind of surreal, meditative feeling, — almost as though I had entered another dimension. It was not simply music combined with choreography. To me, it felt like a moving communal ritual.

The spirit of Awa Odori seemed to tell me, at every moment and from every corner: If you are already here, do not just watch, join in. The boundary between performer and spectator simply disappeared. When you are standing in the street during the festival, somehow you naturally start moving along with everyone else. And before you know it, you have become part of the festival yourself. Uhh… what a night!

After Awa Odori, people asked me which one I would rank first, – the Kochi Yosakoi Festival or Awa Odori in Tokushima?

That is a difficult question to answer, because at Yosakoi I actually danced as part of a team, whereas this time I was participating among the crowd.

At the same time, I loved Awa Odori precisely because the audience seemed to be much more deeply involved in the whole festival atmosphere.

Either way, it was a very special experience. My soul is still ringing with it!
