Life on Shikoku Island through Merike’s eyes

For the First Time in Japan

For a long time, I had secretly been hoping that my childhood friend would come to visit me in Japan. This year, she finally decided to make the trip. It was her first time in Japan.

Regina and I met first time when we were 12 years old. I lived on the second floor of our apartment building, and she lived on the fourth. We even had our own secret language. We would tap a spoon against the radiator pipes that ran through the building to let each other know whether we wanted to visit or go outside together. Every knock had its own meaning.

The first activity we experienced together in Tosacho was miso paste making. It was a new experience for both of us, and, under the guidance of Eri-san, we made some delicious miso. Regina even took some of the miso paste back to Estonia to share this unique taste experience with her loved ones.

As I was presenting Estonia and sharing my work as a local revitalization coordinator at Tosacho International Day, was Regina as my friend also invited. She was pleasantly surprised by the strong sense of community and the way foreign residents were welcomed and included in local community life.

We also had time to attend an evening event at Sameura Canoe Terrace, visit the Obuchi family at their mountain home, explore the Aikawa terraced rice fields, take part in a community gathering at Minna no Mori and local festival at Sameura Dam. Regina tried a variety of foods at the local festival. She really enjoyed the different Japanese dishes. Her favourites turned out to be pumpkin soup and the local curry. Although she doesn’t particularly enjoy drinking beer in Estonia, in Tosacho she took the opportunity to try different varieties of beer what tasted good for her.

…. to be continued.
