私は、エストニアから来る皆さんを、土佐町で一年の中でもっとも大きな祭りに迎えることを、ずっと楽しみにしていました。
私は地域のお祭りが大好きです。
ただ外から眺めるのではなく、しばらくの間、その地域の人たちと一緒になって、地域の一員になったような気持ちを味わえる——そんなお祭りが特に好きです。
だからこそ、私の母国エストニアから来る皆さんとその経験を分かち合い、私が大好きになった日本の田舎の魅力を少しでも感じてもらいたいと思っていました。
今回エストニアから来た5人の皆さんにとって、土佐町は初めて訪れる場所でした。
そして、皆さんはあえて、日本の大都市をめぐる旅ではなく、地方の日本を知る旅を選びました。
もちろん、土佐町の外にも少し足を延ばしました。
高知を少し観光したり、祖谷渓にも足を運び、有名なかずら橋も渡りました。
それでも、旅の半分以上を過ごしたのは、ここ土佐町です。
山々、川、地域の伝統、そしてこの町の日々の暮らし——。
そんな土佐町の中で、皆さんと一緒に時間を過ごすことができました。
旅を終えた皆さんは、無事にエストニアへ帰国しました。
そして帰国前に、旅の感想を送ってくれました。
今日は、その言葉を皆さんにもご紹介したいと思います。

「友人や知り合いに、四国の中心にある素敵な場所、土佐町のことをぜひ伝えたいと思います。土佐町は、本当に訪れる価値のある場所です。」
Mait（マイト）
「特に心に残ったのは、山の中で行われた『百萬遍（ひゃくまんべん）』という祭りです。自分自身も参加することができ、とても素晴らしい経験でした。」
Kadi（カディ）
「自然、文化、人々のおもてなし、そして気候——すべてが本当に素晴らしかったです。
細かいことまで一つひとつ挙げ始めたら、きっとリストは終わりません。
美味しくて、とても種類が豊富で、いつも美しく盛り付けられた食事。旅のあらゆる場面で楽しむことができました。もうすでに恋しく思っています！
温泉も素晴らしかったですし、布団で眠ることも、とても心地よく、身体が休まりました。
驚いたことに、布団で寝ることにはすぐに慣れることができました。6時間の時差も、ぐっすり眠ることでしっかり取り戻すことができました。
地域の『スリッパ文化』も面白かったです。そしてもちろん、日本の素晴らしいトイレも！まさに伝説的ですね。
今回の日本旅行は、私が想像していた以上に、ずっと多くのものを与えてくれました。」

家でもこの習慣を取り入れるために、これから何足か買わなければならないかもしれません。
そしてもちろん、自然、山、人々——本当に素晴らしい経験でした！

「日本への旅は、本当に特別で、心に深く残る経験になりました。
四国の自然、お寺、地域の暮らし、そして日本の穏やかで清潔、整然とした環境は、毎日、新しく美しい発見を与えてくれました。
特に心に残ったのは、人々の心からの親切さ、温かさ、そしておもてなしです。
旅はとても素晴らしく企画されていて、たくさんの美しい思い出とともに帰国しました。
そして、日本にはぜひもう一度来たい——そんな強い気持ちも持ち帰りました。」
皆さんの言葉を読んで、私自身も嬉しい気持ちになりました。
そして、もう一つ嬉しく思うことがあります。
私にとって大切なものになったこの場所を、エストニアから来た皆さんと分かち合うことができたことです。
ここでの暮らし。
ここにある自然。
ここで受け継がれてきた文化。
そして、この場所で出会う人々。
私が心から大切に思い、愛している日本の一つの場所——
私の土佐町。
この物語は、まだまだ続きます。
10月末には、また新しいエストニア人のグループが土佐町を訪れます。
次はどんな出会いが待っているのでしょう。今から、皆さんに土佐町で待っているものを見てもらうのが楽しみです。
I had been looking forward to welcoming Estonians to Tosacho’s biggest festival of the year. I love local festivals — the kind of festivals where you don’t simply watch from the sidelines, but become part of the community for a while. I wanted to share that experience with people from my home country and give them a glimpse of the rural Japan that I have come to love.

I had been looking forward to welcoming Estonians to Tosacho’s biggest festival of the year. I wanted to share that experience with people from my home country and give them a glimpse of the rural Japan that I have come to love.
All five visitors from Estonia were experiencing Tosacho for the very first time. And they had made a conscious choice: instead of travelling from one major Japanese city to another, they wanted to discover rural Japan.
Of course, we did venture beyond Tosacho. We explored a little of Kochi and travelled to the Iya Valley, where we crossed the famous Kazurabashi Bridge. But more than half of our journey was spent right here in Tosacho — among the mountains, rivers, local traditions and everyday life of the town.
The travellers have now safely made their way back home to Estonia. Before leaving, they shared some of their impressions with me — and I’m delighted to share them with you.

“I will definitely tell my friends and acquaintances that there is a wonderful place in the heart of Shikoku Island called Tosacho, and that it is absolutely worth visiting.”
Mait:
“The festival in the mountains, Hyakumanben, left a particularly deep impression on me. I had the opportunity to take part in it myself, and it was an incredible experience.”
Kadi:
“The nature, culture, hospitality and climate were simply amazing. If I started listing all the details, the list would be endless: the delicious, wonderfully varied and beautifully presented food that I enjoyed at every step. I already miss it! The onsens and the wonderfully restorative experience of sleeping on a futon were also highlights.
Surprisingly, it was very easy to get used to sleeping on a futon, and I slept so well that I managed to catch up on my six-hour time difference. The local slipper culture was fascinating, and of course the amazing Japanese toilets, which are legendary in their own right.
This trip to Japan brought me so much more than I could ever have imagined.”
Kati:
“I agree with Kadi 100%, especially when it comes to the slippers. I’ll probably have to buy a few pairs for home now so I can introduce the tradition there as well.
And of course, the nature, mountains and people — what an incredible experience! Thank you!”
Karin:
“My trip to Japan was a truly special and deeply memorable experience. The nature of Shikoku, the temples, local life and Japan’s peaceful, clean and well-organized environment offered something new and beautiful every day.
What touched me most was the genuine kindness, helpfulness and hospitality of the people. The trip was wonderfully organized, and I returned home with many beautiful memories and a strong feeling that I definitely want to visit Japan again.”
Reading their words makes me happy for another reason, too. I’m grateful that I was able to share with people from Estonia something that has become so meaningful to me — a place, a way of life and a part of Japan that I truly love, – my Tosacho.
And this story is far from over. Another group of Estonians will arrive in Tosacho at the end of October. I can’t wait to show them what awaits here.
